Rockford Cagefighting Championships Review
article by Alex GutierrezI had the pleasure to attend Rockford Cagefighting Championships and I am glad I got to go. The card had 12 Amateur bouts and 6 pro bouts, and all the fights delivered there were no boring fights. If you blinked, you missed something good.
Jeff Lavelle vs. Dennis Dombrow
Both men traded some blows, and then Dombrow secured a takedown and worked from the top landing a few punches. Dombrow went for an armbar and looked to be locked in deep and it seemed Lavelle tapped but the ref did not see it. Lavelle escapes and ends up in Dombrow's guard where he locked in the triangle choke forcing Lavelle to tap out at the 2:53 mark of the first round.
Damian Norris vs. Mike Wikoff
Damian Norris was the favorite to win this fight and from what I heard around the venue was that, he was no joke. Wikoff scored a big slam takedown but wasn't able to capitalize on it. Norris tied him up and the ref stood both fighters up. Norris was landing some heavy blows and caught a kick from Wikoff throwing him to the ground and gains side control and reigns down some vicious elbows. Norris lets Wikoff up and after trading punches Norris goes for a takedown but is stuffed and Wikoff sinks in the guillotine to get the upset victory.
Mike Cannon vs. Michael Sanchez
Sanchez Scored a takedown early on and had top control but found himself in trouble with Cannon working for a kimura from the bottom it looked to be locked in when Sanchez tried to escape but only to have his back taken. Cannon works for a Rear naked choke and sinks it in to get the tap 2:51 of the 1st round.
Anthony Goodwin vs. Jesse Coca
Both guys came out throwing and battling for position. Goodwin was landing some very hard leg kicks. There was a scramble which left both guys looking for a heel hook. Both guys were unsuccessful in locking the heel hook in. Coca gets up off the mat and gets taken down again by Goodwin who gets the guillotine secured and Coca is forced to tap out in round 1.
Kenny Booker vs. Jay Ellis
There was some pre-fight trash talk before this bout which made this fight even more interesting to watch. Kenny Booker tried to end this fight early with a huge flying knee but Ellis was able to avoid it but Booker managed to get into Ellis's guard where he worked some punches and hammerfists. Ellis managed to tie up Booker forcing the ref to stand them up. Booker got the better of the striking after the reset knocking Ellis down with a punch then booker lets him back up where Ellis got the takedown. Booker used the cage effectively to escape and get Ellis's back and sank in the Rear Naked Choked forcing Jay Ellis to tap out at the 4:46 mark of the 1st round.
Shayne Adams vs. Robert Morrow
Shayne Adams was the hometown favorite and this was his retirement fight so he was looking to go out on top. Adams came out putting pressure on Morrow both landing some hard shots. They clinch where Morrow lands a violent knee to Adams chin sending him to the mat where Morrow followed up with some punches and hammerfists until the ref saw enough. Morrow gets the KO victory at 49 seconds of round 1. Adams announced his retirement after the bout that was met with a standing ovation from the crowd.
My words cannot describe the action packed card that was put on by these fighters. These guys put on a hell of a show and I am glad I got to be there to witness it. Best wishes to Shayne Adams in his retirement and best of luck to all the fighters on the card.
