Ben Deller-Smith gearing up for UCMMA 28.
Ben Deller-Smith is another member of the fighter's revolution coming out of Hampshire in Southern England. With one semi-pro and two pro wins and no losses under his belt, Ben is now stepping up to fight on UK MMA pioneer Dave O`Donnell's celebrated UCMMA promotion. His match up will be against another tough up-and-comer in the shape of BKK Fighter Sean Carter. With no zeros between these two fighters we can expect fireworks as they look to take each other out. It's a night packed with great match ups so therefore a good time for Ben to showcase his skillset. With his two pro wins coming via RNC we at AddictedMMA felt it was time to get into the head of Ben Deller-Smith and find out if he's looking to submit his opponent again, or send him to sleep via fist or shin.Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Ben Deller-Smith:
Addicted: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Ben, we know you have been training under the guidance of BJJ blackbelt Andy Roberts and we have been very impressed by his stable of fighters recently, but what else can you tell us about your martial arts background?
Ben: I train most of the time with Andy, but have also been working on other areas with my boxing coach, Ross Nicholls, and strength and conditioning work with Nick Chapman at Fight Science, as well as Mauy Thai and wrestling work with the other coaches at Andy Roberts.
Addicted: And how has your preparation for your fight with Sean Carter been going? It's been a while since your last fight, do you feel this has helped or hindered you?
Ben: Preparations have involved working with all of the top people that I've mentioned above. I am committed to training and put the effort in even when I don't have a fight scheduled. I dont think the time between fights has hindered me in any way, I am always ready for the next fight opportunity, if anything the time has allowed me to be even better prepared.
Addicted: AddictedMMA were present at your last fight, it was a great performance against a tough fighter in Joachim Eikeri at Into the Cage in Andover last November. What do you remember about the fight?
Ben: Eikeri was a strong opponent, he put up a good fight, but let's face it there's not a huge amount to remember when it's over in 1 minute 57 seconds !
Addicted:That is true my friend! Before your fight that night I was chatting with big Nick Chapman and he made a point of telling me to keep my eye on you, he described you as a beast that was going places. How does it feel to have a fighter of Nick`s calibre who has achieved so much in such a short time compliment you like that?
Ben: Nick has supported me from day one and I have been fortunate to train alongside him for some time now. I also have the benefit of attending his gym, Fight Science for my strength and conditioning work. As you say, Nick has achieved a huge amount in a short space of time and it is an honour to be complimented by him.
Addicted: So your opponent on May 26th Sean Carter is a tough looking customer, he had his first win via submission as well, have you been able to do any research on him and have you compiled a game plan?
Ben: I watched his last fight against Danny Welsh, that was the only fight of his I was able to get hold of. I have compiled a game plan with the support of my trainers and coaches, but I will be keeping that to myself !
Addicted: Very wise, and do you feel any added pressure stepping up to such a big platform in UCMMA so early in your career?
Ben: UCMMA is a big show and I realise how fortunate I am to be given this opportunity relatively early in my career, however fighting comes naturally to me, it's in my blood, I don't feel pressured by stepping up, I'm looking forward to having a bigger platform to showcase what I can do.
Addicted: Do you have a message that you would like to send to Sean?
Ben: I'm looking forward to the challenge of the fight, I don't know much about him, but I'm ready to defend my unbeaten record so he better bring his best game.
Addicted: With so many exciting new fighters coming out of Andy Roberts BJJ such as Aj Russell and Gareth Millar just to name a couple, things must be getting crazily competitive down there in Farnborough?
Ben: We are not really competitive with each other, we all work well together and are able to complement each other's training regimes.
Addicted: So away from training and fighting what do you like to do in your own time?
Ben: I don't really have any spare time, any spare time I have is spent training.
Addicted: Sounds like hard work man, is there anybody out there that you would like to thank Ben?
Ben: There are a few people that I would like to thank for their support; obviously Andy Roberts then James Hardy for their BJJ coaching, Nick Chapman, Mick Walker my Thai boxing coach, Barney and Chubbs my wrestling coaches, Matt Whyton & Ross Nicholls my boxing coaches and Mike Harvey- Browne and all of the guys at Andy Roberts BJJ that I train with - too many names to mention! I also need to thank my wife for putting up with me and doing all my washing after training!
Addicted: And last but not least it's time for our signature question, outside of MMA what are you addicted to?
Ben: What else is there to be addicted too?
Addicted: Fairpoint Ben, a good MMA addiction is impossible to top. Anyways all the best to you this coming weekend. Im sure your fight with Sean will be a classic.
