UIC 8: Lee Caers "I Would Love a Five Round War"

Lee Caers will fill one half of the main event of next weekend's Ultimate Impact Cagefighting 8 event in Cheltenham. Standing across the cage from Lee for the third time in under a year will be Ben Constantine.

With the greatest MMA trilogy series a serious possibility after their first two bouts at UIC 6 & 7, add to that the brand new UIC Welterweight title that's on the line and it should be a blockbuster of a scrap. So after chatting to Ben last week I caught up with Lee and asked him about his thoughts on the bout....

AddictedMMA: It's good to catch up again Lee. August 4th will see you and Ben Constantine go at it for the third time. I know you're training hard at the Combat Athletics Academy but have you figured out a way of stopping those insanely ridiculous takedown slams that Ben possesses?

Lee: I don't think there is a way of stopping them to be honest; I just need to make sure i'm in control when we hit the mat and I can get up whenever I want too.

AddictedMMA: Ben won the first fight at UIC 6; you won the second at UIC 7 in two of the most incredible fights I've ever seen. This time it's for the inaugural welterweight belt at UIC 8; will that alter the way you approach the fight or will it be "balls to the wall" as usual?

Lee: It will be no different to the last two. I love a good fight and I don't want to lose, I would love a five round war as long as I come out the winner!

AddictedMMA: Have you had a chance to watch the second fight back on video yet? If so what did you make of your performance in February and where do you feel that you have improved as a mixed martial artist since then?

Lee: I have watched it loads, I thought I did well in the first round, got beat up in the second round, and came back to life in the third. Ben pushed the pace of the fight, and was definitely ahead on points; I never want to leave it to the judges!

I feel that I have improved in that I've started knocking people out. I've won my last two fights by KO, and TKO.

AddictedMMA: Obviously being a part of the fight it's harder to gauge how good it is, but do you realise how incredible the first two fights have been?? I've been on the edge of my seat for all five and a half rounds so far, at one point I got so embroiled in it I forgot to take my notes!

Lee: Not really, the first is still a blur, and the second I think we both were better fighters and kept our hands up better, well looking in there mirror the next day tells me I did. I wasn't so pretty first time round (laughs).

AddictedMMA: You've gone 3-1 in pro MMA bouts so far in 2012. How confident are you that after this bout it'll be 4-1?

Lee: I am confident that I will get the win. I'll be leaving it all in the cage come August 4th.

AddictedMMA: There seems to be a healthy respect between you and Ben, and dare I say it friendship after your first two bouts. Does that make it harder to get in there and punch him in the face? Or is it a case of when the bell rings it's all business?

Lee: Yeah I respect Ben and I think he is a great fighter, it doesn't make it harder as it's all business in the cage. I think Ben is like me and would rather know he's in a fight and have good scrap. Then we'll a enjoy a deserved beer or 10 after.

AddictedMMA: UIC 8 is stacked with some insanely good looking fights which is a testament to Paul Sutherland's matchmaking abilities. Apart from your own which fight are you looking forward to the most?

Lee: I'm looking forward to seeing Mark Tucker vs. Marc Allen; I see this as wrestling vs. BJJ. And BJJ usually wins.

AddictedMMA: Is there anyone you'd like to thank or send a shout out to?

Lee: Yeah all of my team and coaches at Combat (Athletics Academy), apart from Kieran who's been moonlighting! (Laughs).

And Hands and Tans in Liskeard for the spray tan I'll be having.

AddictedMMA: I've already asked you our signature question once or twice, but since we last spoke has Lee Caers gained any new Addictions?

Lee: I'm Addicted to getting picked up and slammed....

AddictedMMA: Ha ha very good. Thanks for your time Lee and good luck for August 4th.

Lee: Cheers Steve
