Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Shinya Aoki Set For Dream Event In JulyIn what is both a strange and amazing matchup, it has been comfirmed today by Fight Sport Asia, that Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba, will take on current Dream Lightweight champion, Shinya Aoki, in a welterweight clash, which is likely for the end of July, although no date has been confirmed.
29 year old Shinya Aoki (30-6-1) is considered the best submission specialist at 155lbs, and a standard top ten ranked lightweight. The bendy champion is considered to be the best Japanese fighter of the current era, and has consistently proved why with wins over Eddie Alvarez, Joachim Hansen and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Aoki has defended his belt three times, but is venturing up a division for the first time since losing to Hayato Sakurai back in 2009.
42 year old Kazushi Sakuraba (26-12-1-2) is arguably the only Japanese fighter in history with a reputation as good as Aoki's. Sakuraba has been fighting the best fighters around ever since 1996. During a storied career, often spent in the wrong weight class, Sakuraba has scored huge wins over Vitoe Belfort, Rampage Jackson, Guy Mezger, Ken Shamrock and Kevin Randleman. Sakuraba will forever be known to adoring fans as "The Gracie Hunter", after scoring wins over Royce, Renzo, Royler, and Ryan Gracie...Even scoring submissions over two of them. Sakuraba will be looking to snap a four fight losing streak, dating back to October 2009.
