Report: Benson Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez Likely For UFC on FOX 7

With former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez and his supposed guaranteed UFC title shot currently tied up with legal issues, the next challenger to UFC lightweight champion looks to be the last ever Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. are reporting that the bout is very likely to go down on Saturday, April 20th, 2013, as the main event of UFC on FOX 7.

After a long wait, 30 year old Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez (21-2) will finally get the opportunity to test the shark infested waters of the UFC lightweight division, a division many believe to be the most competitive in MMA. As well as getting the chance to unify both the Strikeforce and UFC belts, Melendez will also have the opportunity to avenge his good friend and Cesar Gracie teammate Nate Diaz, who was dominated by Henderson in the UFC on FOX 5 main event. Melendez is unbeaten in his last seven fights, most recently taking a decision over nemesis Josh Thomson, completing the trilogy between the two.

29 year old Benson "Smooth" Henderson (18-2) is fast proving himself to be the best 155lb fighter in the world. Bendo is a former WEC champion, and quickly established himself as a legitimate contender in the UFC with wins over Mark Bocek, Jim Miller and Clay Guida. Henderson spent the majority of 2012 dueling with Frankie Edgar, spending 50 minutes in the cage with him over two controversial decision victories, earning and defending the UFC belt in the process. Most recently Henderson put on a dominating performance over Nate Diaz, easily winning every round against the Stockton bad boy.

It is important to remember that this bout has not yet been made official by the UFC, but the news is expected to be confirmed soon.
